Lichfield Leisure Transformation
We are working on a project to create a new leisure centre for Lichfield to replace Friary Grange Leisure Centre. Initial proposals for the centre include a 25 metre swimming pool, a fitness suite, and three group exercise studios/multi-function rooms. We are also intending to include a floodlit 3G artificial turf football pitch at the rear of the centre.
We are hoping to submit outline planning permission for the leisure centre towards the end of 2021.
The new leisure centre is vitally important to the future of the city and the district and represents so much more than just a building. We hope that this new facility, alongside Burntwood Leisure Centre, will become a focal point for helping increase participation in leisure and sport across our district, helping tackle health issues and creating a new hub for the community to complement existing facilities.

Why build a new leisure centre?
We need to build a new leisure centre because Lichfield’s current facility – Friary Grange Leisure Centre – is over 50 years old. Although significant repairs have been carried out the building is nearing the end of its useful life.
In February 2021 we completed a programme of essential repairs at Friary Grange that will help us to keep the doors open until the new leisure centre is built.
Why Stychbrook Park?
Following a review of available sites in and around Lichfield, consideration of planning and environmental constraints, and other issues including vehicle access, Stychbrook Park was selected as our preferred option for the location for the new leisure centre.
More Details of the other sites considered, and the reasons we chose not to progress them are available here on the proposals page
We have committed £5 million towards the cost of the new leisure centre and in June 2021 submitted a bid for £5 million to the government’s Levelling Up Fund as part of our strategy to fund the development of the new leisure centre.
