Proposals

Initial proposals for the centre include a 25 metre swimming pool, a fitness suite, and three group exercise studios/multi-function rooms. We are also intending to include a floodlit 3G artificial turf football pitch at the rear of the centre.

We are proposing to locate the new leisure centre at Stychbrook Park. The park was chosen as the preferred location following a review of potential locations across Lichfield which evaluated the following sites;

  • Beacon Park
  • Darnford Park
  • Saddlers Wood Park
  • Shortbutt’s Park
  • The Birmingham Road site
  • Stychbrook Park
  • Stowe Fields
  • Leomansley Park

We conducted an initial review of suitably sized undeveloped sites in and around Lichfield City and identified eight potential sites for the proposed new leisure centre. One of the important affordability criteria for the review was that sites needed to be already owned by Lichfield District Council. We were also keen to make sure that the new leisure centre was built within Lichfield City and preferably in the North Lichfield area close to the existing facility at Friary Grange.

Although there will be an impact on Stychbrook Park, the site assessment indicated that the ecological impact at Stychbrook would be lower than for the other options. The large site at Stychbrook Park creates the potential to distance the centre from neighbouring houses and allows for the retention of the majority of the public open space.

Stychbrook Park has several other advantages as a site for a leisure centre whereas the other sites reviewed each present issues that would make development more difficult.

Stowe Fields • Flood risk
• Conservation Area
• Not a suitable size - leisure centre would take up most of open space
Shortbutts Park• Poor vehicle access
• Restricted visibility
• Tree loss
• Loss of public open space
Saddlers Wood• Not suitable size – would lose more than half the non-wooded site
• Nearby woodland would create operational challenges
Leomansley Park• Green Belt area
Birmingham Road• Conservation Area
• Nearby heritage buildings
• Not suitable size – location of site would restrict construction
• Loss of deliverables from City Centre Masterplan – a leisure centre would likely take up the entire site
Darnford Park• Poor vehicle access
• Significant trees loss
• Site layout would push construction too close to housing
Beacon Park• Green Belt area
• Historic flagship park
